Wenger: Arsenal Closing On A New Signing

Wenger: Arsenal are close to a new signing

The Gunners boss says he is fed up with the transfer speculation surrounding his club and says he will only spend money on the right players this summer
Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal are close to bringing in a new signing following the Gunners' 0-0 draw with Leicester City on Saturday.
The result leaves Arsenal without a win after two games having lost their opening fixture against Liverpool at the Emirates.
"Yes we are close," he told BT Sport. "But I would say spending in itself is not a quality. Spending and buying the right players is a quality.
"I am a bit fed up to always respond to the same things. We look and analyse absolutely everything and we have to make the right decisions."
Wenger also praised new signing Rob Holding who started alongside Laurent Koscielny in central defence and helped the Gunners keep a clean sheet at the home of the champions.
“Nobody speaks about the performance of Rob Holding today - he is English, he is 20 years old, you should be happy. But I am sorry he didn't cost £55m so it cannot be good,” he added.“That is, for me, what is most disappointing – we don’t speak about the performances of the players anymore. We just speak about anything else but football and I believe it is not right.”

RUMOURS: Chelsea to bid £60m for Koulibaly

RUMOURS: Chelsea to bid £60m for Koulibaly
Chelsea have moved to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly in a deal that could cost a club-record £60 million, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Antonio Conte has brought in N'Golo Kante and Michy Batshuayi this summer and is looking to further strengthen his team before the end of the month.
A deal for Koulibaly may not mark the end of Chelsea's business, the report claims, with Romelu Lukaku still in their sights despite Everton's reluctance to sell

Two Or Three Clubs Could Tempt Me From Leicester

Mahrez: 'Two or three' clubs could tempt me from Leicester

The Algeria international has been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea this summer and suggested he wants to stay in the Premier League

Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez has hinted that "two or three" clubs could tempt him away from the King Power Stadium.
The PFA Player of the Year's future remains uncertain heading into the final weeks of the transfer window, with Arsenal and Chelsea continuing to be linked with his signature.
And Mahrez has suggested he would like to stay in the Premier League, but refused to be drawn on which clubs he might like to join in the future.

"It is a super league and I would like to stay here as long as possible," he told France Football.
"Now, there are two or three clubs in the world, that if they come for me, it definitely makes you think, if you understand what I am trying to say."

Pristine Raheem - Sterling shrugs off summer struggles as Man City impress

Pristine Raheem - Sterling shrugs off summer struggles as Man City impress

The England winger, or 'Raz' as Pep Guardiola calls him, has had a rough few months but he looks a different player on the right-hand side for the Blues
If Manchester City's Premier League opener provided evidence of slow progress under Pep Guardiola, Tuesday's Champions League play-off victory was much more like it.
City did just about enough to squeeze past Sunderland at the weekend. There were signs of Guardiola's influence - most notably the full-backs coming into central midfield - but things did not quite click, which is to be expected at this stage of the Catalan's reign.
Their dismantling of Steaua Bucharest, though, was far more impressive. The passing was more crisp, the movement looked more fluid and the chances flowed. It must be said that the opposition were far less dogged than the Black Cats, but City thrived in the space they were afforded.
Sergio Aguero missed two first-half penalties but, incredibly, he scored a hat-trick anyway.
His first, City's second of the night, was laid on beautifully by Raheem Sterling. The man pilloried by sections of the British press (though, it must be said, usually not the sports sections) during and after the European Championship showed why City paid upwards of £45 million for him a year ago.

It is said Guardiola gave that move the go-ahead last summer, several months before his move to the Etihad Stadium was confirmed.
The boss admits he, as well as his backroom team, had been won over by "Raz" - as he calls him - long before he was thinking about a move to Manchester.
"He can play right and left, he can go byline or go inside, and that is so important," Guardiola said on Saturday after Sterling had impressed. "He is a fighter and of course we want more of him, but we are so so happy.
"We are happy for him because he's a very nice guy, and from the beginning I had a feeling - maybe it will be a mistake, maybe for the rest of the season Raz is not going to play good - but from the beginning I had that feeling that this guy is good.
"I saw many times in England, when playing Liverpool, I said, 'Wow this guy is good'. Not just me, all the staff, all the physios, and my assistant, wanted to have him, wanted to have him to see the real Sterling."
The real Sterling, City fans will be increasingly hopeful, is the one we are seeing now, rather than the young man who struggled at the back end of last season and carried those problems into the Euros.
Things got so bad for Sterling in France that Guardiola called him personally in a bid to keep his spirits up. There was no immediate improvement, even if he did produce a fine run to win England's penalty in that fateful game against Iceland, but he looks much better now.

Indeed, he's won two more penalties already this season. He also picked up two impressive assists; before teeing up Aguero, he set up City's opener in Romania, turning his marker inside out before cutting it back to David Silva.
Sterling had been used in a variety of roles by Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool but it seems the right-hand side could become his home under Guardiola. Nobody would have seen it, but the Catalan was said to be impressed by the Englishman's performance there in a behind-closed-doors friendly against St Johnstone. He has played there ever since.
He started last season in fine form, of course, but his campaign petered out along with most of his team-mates. The atmosphere at City these days is increasingly positive.
There are signs that the players are tuning in to Guardiola's wave length. John Stones, in his second appearance, was imperious at the back. He was signed because of his penetrative passing and it was on display here on numerous occasions.
Kevin De Bruyne looked lost at the weekend but there was a marked improvement against Steaua, Silva looked something like his old self in a more advanced role, and Nolito picked up his first goal for the club.

Claudio Bravo will be another piece of the puzzle when he joins from Barcelona.

Chelsea 2-1 West Ham: Diego Costa sets Conte era off with a bang

The Spain international's 89th minute winner was a warning to any incoming striker to Stamford Bridge that he considers himself the main man
Chelsea 2-1 West Ham: Diego Costa sets Conte era off with a bang
Antonio Conte may still be keen to add another striker to his Chelsea squad, but Diego Costa sent his manager a message that, whether Romelu Lukaku joins or not, he is ready and willing to lead the line at Stamford Bridge.
The Spain international scored a last minute winner against London rivals West Ham as Conte took charge of Chelsea for the first time in the Premier League
His strike saved Chelsea from a disappointing draw after James Collins struck an equaliser against the run of play to cancel out Eden Hazard's earlier strike.
Conte finds himself still chasing two players despite already kicking off the Premier League campaign, with Lukaku his main target to improve their forward line.
But while it was hardly a vintage performance for the current first-choice centre-forward, he proved he still has the ability to pop up with goals when the Blues most need them.
Costa's strike went against the run of play for him as he frustrated by missing chances all evening, and he should have been sent off for a late foul on West Ham's goalkeeper Adrian.
He will still have to do more to improve his all-round game, having completed a meagre five passes in the first half. Costa's volatile temperament must also come under control, as he received a booking for dissent under new Premier League rules that will oblige players to keep their thoughts about referees strictly personal.
Nevertheless, the goal is the confidence boost the 27-year-old needed, especially after a summer of uncertainty with Atletico Madrid looking to sign him - leaving him distracted during Chelsea's pre-season tour.
Costa was also dropped by Spain for Euro 2016 and was one of many players to suffer poor form under Jose Mourinho, but he has sent a message to Conte that he is still capable of firing the goals required this season.
And if Lukaku does come back to west London, he will certainly have a battle on his hands to take Costa's role at Chelsea.

Sevilla 0-2 Barcelona: Suarez fires Catalans to Supercopa advantage

Sevilla 0-2 Barcelona: Suarez fires Catalans to Supercopa advantage

Injuries to Jeremy Mathieu and Andres Iniesta put something of a dampener on the Catalans' victory in Andalucia
Luis Suarez and Munir El Haddadi ensured Barcelona beat Sevilla 2-0 in the opening leg of the Supercopa de Espana but victory at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan came at a price for Luis Enrique's men.
Sevilla made most of the running during the first half where Barca's initially fitful progress was not helped by the loss of captain Andres Iniesta and Jeremy Mathieu to injury.
The participation of club icon Iniesta and defender Mathieu in Wednesday's second leg at Camp Nou could now be in doubt, but their team-mates will at last take a healthy advantage into that encounter.
Following a sensational return of 59 goals from 53 club matches last term, Suarez was soon back on the goal trail with a 54th-minute opener.
Sevilla's form faded from that point - their exertions in pushing Real Madrid to extra time in this week's UEFA Super Cup possibly a factor - and the second goal arrived nine minutes from time.
Munir was the first non-enforced substitution made by Luis Enrique and, amid his ongoing search for attacking reinforcements, the Barcelona boss was given a timely reminder of the 20-year-old's quality.
Sevilla, featuring five close-season signings in their starting XI, answered boss Jorge Sampaoli's call to take the game to Barcelona and made most of the early running to excite a fervent home crowd, despite Sergio Rico being forced into a sharp seventh-minute save to deny Suarez.
Unfortunately for the Europa League holders, their threat down the flanks was rarely matched by the quality of their final ball, while a counter-attack featuring Suarez and Lionel Messi lacked the forward duos trademark ruthlessness before Sergio Busquets lofted a shot harmlessly over.
Attempts by Luis Enrique's team to settle were dealt a blow when Mathieu made way with an apparent hamstring injury, allowing fellow Frenchman Lucas Digne to come on for his debut at left-back.
Iniesta was then on the receiving end of a robust challenge from Mariano and, with the Barca captain failing to overcome a heavy blow to his right knee, Denis Suarez followed Digne in making an earlier-than-planned debut in the 36th minute of a bruising first half for LaLiga's champions.
Rico's impeccable positioning came to Sevilla's aid four minutes after the break when Luis Suarez glanced a beautifully flighted cross from his namesake Denis goalwards and the same two players were involved when Barcelona broke the deadlock.
Denis Suarez was allowed space to pick a pass into the area once more, where Arda Turan pivoted to cleverly chest the ball into Luis Suarez's path for a typically clinical finish.
The goal shifted Barcelona into gear and Rico's reactions were at their best to claw a dinked finish from Messi to safety before the Sevilla goalkeeper denied Sergi Roberto at the near post in the 64th minute.
Messi linked effectively with the right-back on that occasion and the mercurial Argentine made light of Iniesta's absence by masterfully holding up play, gliding through midfield and threading a perfect pass for Munir to prod past the on-rushing Rico as Sevilla's earlier verve faded from view.
